Since Theatre Direct took up residence in the new Artscape Wychwood Barns in January 2009, Beth has overseen the technical fit-out project for the theatre and studio spaces, developed the company’s venue management and rentals systems and implemented all production and venue staff training including health and safety.

Allan Stratton, a past Festival adjudicator and Summer Courses leader.  Life Above All, the adaptation of his acclaimed novel Chanda's Secrets, has been chosen to compete in Un Certain Regard at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival.

Theatre Ontario invites its members to the Annual Meeting of Theatre Ontario which will be held on Saturday, May 22, 2010 at 11:30am at the The Wyndham Room, London Towers North, 389 Dundas Street, London, Ontario.  For more information, including the report from the Nominating Committee please visit our website.

Meet our Festival 2010 theatres

The 2010 Theatre Ontario Festival is a celebration of community theatre from across the province.  This year, four theatres are bringing award-winning productions to London.

Theatre Burlington is participating in our provincial Festival for the first time since 2005 in Belleville, when they represented western Ontario with their production of Morris Panych's Vigil.  Under their previous nomenclature as Burlington Little Theatre, they won the Elise Award for Outstanding Production in both 2001 and 2002.  This year, they are opening the Festival with Hugh Whitemore's Breaking The Code.

Whitby Courthouse Theatre brings Norm Foster's The Long Weekend and continues a thirteen year streak of including at least one Canadian-written play in the Festival.  Whitby Courthouse Theatre hasn't participated in a Theatre Ontario Festival in over twenty years.  Representing central Ontario, they last appeared in the 1989 Festival in Brockville, when they presented Michael Frayn's Noises Off.  Coincidentally, that is believed to be the only Festival where two groups presented the same play during the week!

The other group presenting Noises Off in 1989?  That was Gateway Theatre Guild from North Bay.  This year, they return to Festival representing northeastern Ontario with a production of Samuel Beckett's Waiting For Godot.  Gateway returns to the Theatre Ontario Festival for the first time since 2002 when they presented Lee McDougall's High Life.  Gateway won the Outstanding Production award at our second Festival in 1974 in Oshawa with a presentation of David French's Leaving Home.

Our Festival will close with a production of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play Doubt by John Patrick Shanley presented by Kingston's Domino Theatre, representing eastern Ontario.  Domino has represented their region many times over the Festival's 37-year history, most recently in Newmarket in 2007 and taking home the Elsie for their production of Arthur Miller's All My Sons.

Theatre Ontario Festival runs May 19 to 23 in London.  For all the information about Theatre Ontario Festival 2010, please visit the host theatre's website.  For information about past Theatre Ontario Festivals, please visit the Festivals page on the Theatre Ontario website.

Youth who are seeking financial aid to attend our annual Theatre Ontario Youth Scene Study have two weeks to get in their applications for funding from the Judy Silver Scholarship Fund.

From June 26 to June 29, Theatre Ontario will be running its annual Youth Scene Study Program in Toronto and Ottawa.  Under the instruction of an experienced theatre facilitator, the participants will learn how to delve deeply into a script to find the nuances of character and relationship. They will learn to interpret scripts by exploring acting techniques to support the text and by developing the actors’ tools to increase communication, imagination, physical awareness and listening skills.  The course is for youth aged 14 to 18.

The application deadline for the Judy Silver Scholarship is May 3, 2010.

Inviting Applications For 2011 Neil Munro Intern Directors Project At The Shaw Festival

Theatre Ontario is pleased to invite applications for the 2011 Neil Munro Intern Directors Project at the Shaw Festival.  The application deadline is June 30, 2010.

Each year, the Shaw Festival hires two Intern Directors for a period of about six months. They look for promising professional directors near the beginning of their careers. Applicants should have a fair bit of professional experience, but probably not in a company as large as the Shaw Festival.

Each intern is assigned to two or three successive shows as an Assistant Director. One of these shows is usually in the Festival Theatre (860 seats) and another in a smaller one (330 seats). For the most part, being an Assistant Director involves observing the senior directors at work in rehearsal, doing research as required, acting as a sounding board as required. (Getting them coffee is not required.) The Interns also assist the company in educating audiences about theatre in general and the Shaw's productions and programmes in particular.

Read all about the Neil Munro Intern Directors Project at the Shaw Festival on the Theatre Ontario website.

Trying to make sense of HST

by John Goddard, Executive Director

There has been a great deal of confusion over the introduction of Harmonized Sales Tax into Ontario, as well as a great deal of misinformation. I am going to try and clarify some of that for our members, but I also encourage each member organization to consult with their own accountant or auditor to consider their own specific situation.

I will start by saying that I have found that the best way to remove the confusion is to change your mind set—that is how I was able to get a much clearer picture and maybe it will work for you. If you try to understand HST by imagining that it is a combination of PST (Provincial Retail Sales Tax) and GST (Goods and Services Federal Tax) you will give yourself needless frustration. The best way to understand HST is to realize that PST has been abolished (hurrah!) and coincidentally, at the same time GST has been increased from 5% to 13% (boo!)
