Behind the Scenes at Ontario’s Theatres

• Studio Theatre Perth has named their new volunteer appreciation award in honour of David and Patricia Parry. David is a past recipient of our Michael Spence Award for Contribution to Community Theatre in the province.
• Nightwood Theatre in Toronto has unveiled their lineup of “the most exciting emerging female playwrights in the city” for their Groundswell Festival 2018.
• Ontario Culture Days is coming up on September 28, 29 and 30.  Among the theatre events registered at press time are an open rehearsal with The MT Space in Waterloo, an hour backstage before call at Burl-Oak Theatre Group in Oakville, a youth company rehearsal and tour at Georgetown Little Theatre, a live radio show at Grey Wellington Theatre Guild in Harriston.

• ICYMI – J. Kelly Nestruck’s Globe and Mail "High school drama” series is now available in its entirety—a first-rate series following a secondary school theatre production that touches on so many issues in theatre today.
• Wondering how you can prepare for the October 19th federal election?  The Professional Association of Canadian Theatres has advocacy tools for professional theatres.
• For registered-charity theatres unsure of the rules around political and partisan activity,  Jini Stolk (the Creative Trust Research Fellow at the Toronto Arts Foundation) wrote about the current “fear of advocacy” and provided some useful tips for organizations.
• Like Toronto Fringe’s Next Stage Theatre Festival and Ottawa Fringe’s undercurrents Festival, the Hamilton Fringe Festival is launching a winter independent theatre festival: The Frost Bites Festival.
• What role do community theatres play in developing creative new talent?  HowlRound posed that question for the August 13th Howl on Twitter, and while I’m not sure the conversation delved as deeply into the topic as I hoped, it was a good start.

• And a new storefront theatre has opened in Colborne: Process Theatre.
• Tarragon Theatre in Toronto has unveiled “Workspace”—a centre for experimentation, exploration, and extensive play development, and featuring donated space.

• I’ve shared this Travis Bedard 2amtheatre.com post before: We need to change our black magical thinking.  One example of black magical thinking: artists vs. administrators.  As Amy Wratchford reminds us, “we really are all on the same team”
• Rachel Grossman on Artsblog: “You know that question ‘how do we build new audiences without losing current ones?’… What if you prioritized the audience you’ve already lost, rather than the audience you might lose?”

Behind the Scenes at Ontario’s Theatres

• Today’s DeColores Festival marks the final event for Toronto’s Alameda Theatre Company; Jon Kaplan profiled their legacy in NOW Magazine.  We have supported Alameda’s Nueva Voz Youth Outreach Program for Latin Canadian theatre artists through grants from our Youth Theatre Training Program.  Tonight Alameda celebrates an end of an era

• Jerry Doiron passed away on October 8.  At Theatre Ontario, we worked with Jerry for many years on the Neil Munro Intern Directors Project at the Shaw Festival.  Eric Coates, President of the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres, wrote a remembrance (Facebook), and there is a memorial at Tarragon Theatre in Toronto on November 3
• On October 9, the community theatre sector experienced similar losses with the deaths of Elaine Hall of Markham.  Elaine was a longtime member and supporter of Markham Little Theatre and Theatre Ontario.

In use for over 20 years, CRP has been embraced internationally by art makers, educators, and administrators at theatre companies, dance departments, orchestras, museums and more. • Deadline to apply to Alameda Theatre’s 2013 De Colores Festival of New Work is November 15.  The De Colores Festival of New Works is a playwrights’ unit/festival, which focuses exclusively on the development of Latin American playwrights in Canada.

• WorkInCulture and ArtsBuild Ontario are pleased to announce a third round of its mentoring network to the cultural sector.  This year’s focus will be on strengthening the business and management skills needed for arts facilities.  The Arts Facility Mentoring Network provides established leaders in Ontario’s non-profit arts community who are responsible for managing, improving and developing facilities with the unique opportunity of one-to-one learning with experienced topic experts.  Deadline to apply is November 30.
