Bringing Together Students and Professionals at Theatre Ontario Next Generation Showcase

By Mairin Smit, Program Coordinator

It’s hard to believe that Theatre Ontario’s Next Generation Showcase 2014 has already come and gone! With so much preparation and fabulous new programming, this year’s event on Sunday, January 19 and Monday, January 20 was an exciting two days of over 200 individual school performances.

Earlier in the fall, I had the pleasure of visiting several of the schools participating in Next Generation Showcase 2014. It was great to be able to connect with the students, answer questions about the event, and encourage them to attend the panel discussions and networking parties. Throughout Showcase, I had the pleasure of seeing many of these students again, as well as meet others from schools I had not visited and chat about their Showcase experience. For many of the students this was their first step into the professional theatre world and the opportunity connect with so many industry professionals over the two days was exciting and valuable.

This year, Next Generation Showcase took place at the Young Centre for the Performing Arts in the historic Distillery District. This venue provided a warm, welcoming and intimate environment for all our Showcase participants and was a great space for our rocking networking parties on both Sunday and Monday evening. With food, music and atmosphere the parties provided an excellent opportunity for students, instructors and industry professionals to chat and connect with each other.

We also provided the opportunity for students to get up-close and personal with artists working in the industry through post-presentation chats with Soulpepper Resident Artists and our filled-to-capacity panel discussion “The Business of Casting” on Sunday evening. This year our panel featured Nina Lee Aquino, Derek Boyes, Robyn Friedman, Andrew Lamb, Larissa Mair, and Derek Ritschel, and was moderated by Kristina Nicoll.  It’s great to be able to facilitate these kind of connections between students and professionals, all under one roof at Next Generation Showcase.

Thank you to everyone who helped make Showcase possible, with a special note of thanks to our Next Generation Showcase 2014 sponsors – Randolph Academy for the Performing Arts, Sheridan College and Soulpepper Theatre. With so much excitement and energy from this year’s event, I’m already looking forward to Next Generation Showcase 2015!

From our Showcase attendees:
“The event was organized beautifully. I as an actor felt good and welcomed in the space, in the theatre, and by all people.” – Next Generation Showcase, Student Participant
“Almost the entire experience was a plus. Getting the opportunity to perform for a room of my peers and the artistic community was amazing! Hearing some industry insights at the panel discussions was enlightening and chatting with people one on one was a great way to feel a sense of community!” -Next Generation Showcase, Student Participant
“We loved the fact that it was more intimate. Meeting with the artists directly after the audition made us all feel at home.” -Next Generation Showcase, School Instructor
“You guys are golden. You are doing the theatre industry a great service by allowing the emerging artists to have a platform. It is Theatre Ontario and the new generations of artists that will shape the future of theatre. I have nothing but gratitude for you guys.” -Next Generation Showcase, Industry Guest

World Festival of Children's Theatre is coming to Canada

The 14th World Festival of Children’s Theatre is coming to Canada in June 2016.  This important festival is a project of the International Amateur Theatre Association (AITA). Its home base is in Germany (every fourth year), and has been produced in Russia, Turkey, Cuba, Denmark, and Japan.

Stratford, Ontario is proud to be its first North American host.

The festival will feature productions from all continents, including developing nations. The organizers will welcome applications from Canadian groups that reflect the philosophy “By children, for children.”  The productions, performed by children aged 7 to 15, will emphasize the importance of theatre’s universal language across cultures, without language or ethnicity barriers. Participants will be hosted by the festival and will take part in performances, workshops, social activities, and the academic program. Applications from theatre companies, schools, community theatres, First Nations, and multicultural groups will be welcome. The application and jury process begins in 2015, so there is time to build and prepare.

Independent Theatre Creator’s International Training Scholarship

Why Not Theatre and Theatre Ontario have partnered in creating this unique and exciting Scholarship that provides the opportunity for up to two emerging theatre artists to train in theatre creation on an international level.

The Scholarship allows for up to two emerging artists to train with Anne Bogart and the SITI Company for one month (May 25 to June 21, 2014) in Saratoga Springs, New York.  They will train in Suzuki, Viewpoints, as well as directing and devising new work.

SITI was founded in 1992 by Anne Bogart and Tadashi Suzuki to redefine and revitalize contemporary theatre in the United States through an emphasis on international cultural exchange and collaboration. For the past 22 years, their impact can be seen on theatre creators around the world.

This program is designed to address the need for theatre artists to access more contemporary artistic training opportunities and to encourage artists to set the stage for the future of theatre and performance creation in Ontario, by having the opportunity to experience high calibre international training.

The scholarship includes course training and application fees, accommodation for the training period, and a travel allowance.  It is sponsored by Nekison Engineering and Contractors Ltd. and funds have been matched by artsVest Toronto.  artsVest Toronto is run by Business for the Arts with the support of the Canadian Heritage and the Toronto Arts Council.

The SITI Company’s TRAINING PHILOSOPHY
It is through the dialogue between Suzuki and Viewpoints, two very distinct yet complementary approaches to the art of acting, that the philosophy and technique of SITI Company is continually explored, revitalized, and articulated.

The Viewpoints and the Suzuki Method are two distinct methods of actor training used in building and staging SITI productions. Company members have been trained by Anne Bogart and Tadashi Suzuki and are uniquely qualified to introduce other theater artists to these challenging and innovative methods.

Read more about The SITI Company's Training Philosophy

SUZUKI METHOD
Developed by internationally acclaimed director Tadashi Suzuki and the Suzuki Company of Toga, the Suzuki Method’s principal concern is with restoring the wholeness of the human body to the theatrical context and uncovering the actor’s innate expressive abilities. A rigorous physical discipline drawn from such diverse influences as ballet, traditional Japanese and Greek theater, and martial arts, the training seeks to heighten the actor’s emotional and physical power and commitment to each moment on the stage. Attention is on the lower body and a vocabulary of footwork, sharpening the actor’s breath control and concentration.

VIEWPOINTS
A technique of improvisation that grew out of the postmodern dance world. It was first articulated by choreographer Mary Overlie, who broke down the two dominant issues performers deal with—time and space—into six categories. She called her approach the Six Viewpoints. SITI’s Anne Bogart and our company members have expanded Overlie’s notions and adapted them for actors. The Viewpoints allows a group of actors to function together spontaneously and intuitively, and to generate bold, theatrical work quickly. It develops flexibility, articulation, and strength in movement and makes ensemble playing really possible.

Unearthing Shakespeare at Theatre Ontario

Discover your intuitive impulses to the works of William Shakespeare—join us at our next Theatre Ontario Weekend Intensive, “Unearthing Shakespeare: Bringing the Bard to Life!” with Melinda Little and Peter Van Wart on February 14 to 16 in Toronto.

This weekend intensive workshop will focus on developing the textual, vocal and physical tools necessary to bring a Shakespearean role to life. Body expressiveness, vocal dexterity and text understanding will be explored and brought into performance. It is ideal for actors wanting to craft a character from the Bard; for performers wishing to expand or heighten their stage presence; and for directors seeking to ground the acting work on the rehearsal floor through high stakes exploration.

In "Unearthing Shakespeare", led by the inventive and inspirational talents of Melinda Little and Peter Van Wart, participants will begin by exploring a Shakespearean sonnet to uncover the textual clues that can be applied to character choices, both physically and vocally. They will then apply these explorations to given scenes from the canon in preparation for performance.

This workshop is brought to you by Theatre Ontario and Randolph Academy for the Performing Arts.

Theatre Ontario offers Weekend Intensive workshops for those interested in developing their skills in theatre performance and production.  The Theatre Ontario Weekend Intensives:
  • Are oriented around relevant performance or production themes, essential to the developing theatre artist
  • Are led by a two-instructor team of renowned theatre practitioners, providing an immersive and intensive learning experience
  • Are taking place over a weekend, comprising Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday, for a total of fifteen instruction hours
  • Offer affordable accommodation rates near the training venue
  • Offer great value for your learning dollar
