Spiderman And Mediocrity
By Dennis Johnson, Community Theatre Coordinator
I thought of several titles for this article. Perhaps SPIDERMAN: Turn Off The Theatre or 3-D Comes To Broadway. The future of theatre is the key question here. Something different is suddenly happening on Broadway and what happens on Broadway eventually has an impact on theatre practitioners everywhere.
I spent the first week of 2011 in New York City. And like everyone else, I wanted to check out the biggest theatrical newsmaker of the season. So I bought a ticket for SPIDERMAN: Turn off the Dark. No big names in the cast, but Julie Taymor directed. Bono and The Edge are credited with music and lyrics. Big names sell tickets.

I don't want to admit how many days have actually passed since the last installment of this "weekly series"...

Conversations
Far too many good ones, but some of my favourites:
- Michael Wheeler who—in my personal opinion—writes the most important arts blog in the City of Toronto, challenged Jeff Melanson (Mayor Rob Ford’s “Arts Czar”) about a blog comment Mr. Melanson made on the Torontoist website; now, I’m assuming it’s a case of “once-bitten, twice-shy” and Mr. Melanson has decided to stay away from “the blogosphere”, but I was really hoping to hear a response from him to that post, possibly the beginning of some kind of conversation between them
- South of the border, Rocco Landesman, the chairman of the National Endowment of the Arts, started a provocative conversation about "supply and demand" in the arts; there’s no possible way to capture all the nuances of this ongoing conversation (which applies everywhere) and there has been a lot of good writing about it, including Trisha Mead’s “open letter” which, if you scroll through the comments, received a response from Mr. Landesman; this is a very difficult and important conversation, I’m very optimistic that there is maturity and enthusiasm to make it a good one
- Kris Joseph wrote a series of daily posts while he attended the Banff/Citadel Professional Theatre Program, and it’s a terrific exploration of craft, with his usual honest self-reflection and humour (and it aggravated my acting workshop itch)
- I sit on a committee with Steve Mosher so I know how passionate he is about this subject: “Orchestral musicians face unhealthy sound levels”; Steve has been a great guide for me in understanding these issues
- And Lauren Gunderson’s “Belated Valentine to American Theatre…and a Patron Named Joyce” is all kinds of charming
TOasts
Congratulations to
- Tara Beagan, the new Artistic Director of Native Earth Performing Arts
- Andrew Lamb, the new Artistic Director of Roseneath Theatre
